The term “Google Is Your Friend” or GIYF is an extension of RTFM (Read The F***ing Manual). It is sometimes given in response to a question when the person being asked believes that the question is easily answered by the manual or on the web, usually using a search engine (in this case, Google). This term is a little bit sarcastic.
Besides “Google is your friend” there is also another version that’s mostly used: “Let me Google that for you” (LMGTFY). Both mean the same thing. Since the rise of the web and ubiquitous search, a similar type of response involves the idea that by asking questions that could easily be answered by even the most cursory, obvious search, the user embarrasses himself by showing that the very idea of searching before asking didn’t even occur to him. The person answering the question mostly gives a link to a website that will animate how to search in Google and get the answer. The answerer thinks that people are too lazy to find it themselves and would rather ask in forums. I often see this kind of answer in StackOverflow, since some people ask quite basic questions.
