Are you a PC or Microsoft Windows user? Or are you using Windows XP, Windows Vista or the newest Windows 7? Can you count how many free software programs you are using on your Windows to do your work more productively or more conveniently without having trouble with licenses or copyright? Okay, let’s start with the internet browser like Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera, or Internet Explorer updates. Internet messengers like Yahoo Messenger, AIM, Google Talk, Skype, Windows Live Messenger and many more out there. Then come multimedia players like iTunes, QuickTime, Winamp, Real Player, and K-Lite Codec Pack. Then many more like compression tools, anti-spyware, firewall and security, developer tools, file transfer tools, backup tools, media tools, office tools, drivers. I cannot even list them one by one because there are too many. And of course they are free!
Okay now you can imagine how much free software is out there. Now with that many software programs to support you, you have two problems. First, when you reinstall your Windows — it’s a public secret that Windows needs a reinstall after a certain time, like once or twice a year if you want the best performance — you need to find and download all the software you were using. Or if you really took your time to keep the master installers on your hard drive, maybe you just need to install them. If not, you really need to search and download them again.
Second, you need to keep the software up to date because of security issues, bug fixes or new features. And you will have a hard time updating all the software one by one. Some of them have an automatic updates feature, but some of them do not. And you need to download it again from the original sites and install it again.
