Run Android Live On Your Desktop

Google Android is an mobile phone operating system upon the Linux kernel and GNU software. Google Android which developed by Google, is known for it high performance and open source mobile phone operating system. It is fast on a mobile phone, so how would it be if it run on real hardware such as your laptop or PC? Before ask how fast it is, you must be wondering if it is possible to run on a PC instead of mobile phone. Of course it can, it based on Linux kernel!

Thanks to android-x86 team that make it possible to run Android on a desktop. Android-x86 is a porting Android to x86 architecture. Which make us possible to run Android on a PC based on x86 architecture. So it is still 32 bit operating system.

What we need to run an Android-x86 to our desktop? It is simple, all you need is just download the iso from the website and a cd or flash drive.

See the steps below to do it:

  1. Download the iso from android-x86. See at the end of this article.
  2. You can whether burn it to a cd or mount it a flashdrive using Unetbootin. What is and how to use Unetbootin? See this article. And to burn the iso to a cd you can use ImgBurn.
  3. So as soon you have a Android bootable disc or flash drive, all you need is reboot your machine and choose boot from cd or flashdrive.
  4. You will see the Android GRUB menu:
    android-x86-1
  5. I would suggest you to choose live CD instead of Installation to your harddrive, due to limitation of some hardware and features.
  6. Just follow the booting screen for a while and you will see the Android desktop:
    android-x86-2
    android-x86-3
  7. Now enjoy and feel how Android performance on your desktop.

I won’t suggest you to install Android on your primary harddrive, due to limitation of the hardware compatibility. But if you want to have fun and try it, you can follow this steps to do the installation.

So far as i try on my laptop with Intel Centrino and 2 GB of memory, is incredibly fast. Enjoy and have fun with the Android-x86.

    Use the google voice app

    Google Voice

Google Voice is a service that is so useful I consider it one of the top benefits of Android itself, especially since Apple rejected the Google Voice app for the iPhone. It gives you a phone number that can ring to multiple places or devices and it allows you to access all of your voicemail and text messages over the Web. The Android app integrates even deeper. It can make outgoing calls look like they’re coming from your Google Voice number so that you can keep your real mobile number private.

I tried this on my eeepc 1201nl:

    – web-camera started and I even saw picture for the moment but it suddenly crushed with an application error;

    – wifi started connection to router, but lost signal everytime while was obtaining an address from dhcp.

Also tested on my PC, there are much more problems like freezing system and lots of unknown drivers.

I think it's too early to say "enjoy android performance on your desktop" 🙁

It looks cool but still not sure if it is good for a desktop OS
