In my case I found in the root folder the index.php dated something 2008. Absolutely no idea why – my last update was on 27.02.2011. Fortunately I had just recently made a backup of my site and simply copied back the older version of the index.php which did the job. The website not blank any more.

However, I'm wondering how on earth this may have happened? Did somebody hack into my site?

Thanks! My blog went blank as well, no feedback at all whatsoever, and it appeared I created a index.php file in my child theme´s root just to hide the directory content. Darn!
But solved now.
I also can't just switch themes because when I switch back I have to reconfigure all the sidebar widgets. So my advice people : first look for some index.html, .shtml, .php in the root of your wp install root or child themes' root, before messing with themes and switching on and off plugins

All I can say is thank you Ivan. I had the same problem today when I tried uploading a toolbar plugin. My index screen went blank and I was on panic mode most of the day.

Its fixed now and again just wanted to say thank you.
