Find Ways to Save Money on Ink Cartridges

Friday October 1, 2010 by

Everyone likes saving money. In today’s economy, saving money is now more important than ever. There are lots of small ways to save a dollar, and many homeowners who never before worried about nickels and dimes are now finding themselves anxiously watching their bank accounts. Luckily, one of the most annoying expenses, the cost of replacing ink cartridges, can be significantly reduced by either opting to refurbish ink cartridges or clean ink cartridges.

Before, many printer users simply changed their ink cartridges whenever they were prompted to by the printer itself. This often substantially wasted much of the residual ink left in the ink cartridge. Even waiting until the ink ran out and running to the store to purchase the recommended color and black ink cartridges can be a waste of money. Like all brand name products, ink cartridges made specifically for the printer by the printer manufacturer are going to cost more than other ink options.

Refurbish or Clean Ink Cartridges

One option is to refurbish ink cartridges. When an ink cartridge is refurbished, it is refilled with ink via a third party who sells it for much cheaper than the original printer brand. Homeowners can also choose to refurbish ink cartridges themselves and purchase a do-it-yourself, at-home cartridge refill kit. However, this option may creation some variation in the quality of the ink and the number of pages one refurbished ink cartridge can produce. Despite this, choosing to refurbish ink cartridges can cost as little as half of what printer users would normally pay, so the potential drop in quality may be worth it. Also, printer users can feel good as refurbishing ink cartridges helps aid in recycling efforts, keeping landfill levels down.

Another money saving tip involves fixing broken ink cartridges rather than purchasing new ones. Choosing to clean ink cartridges that are clogged instead of buying refurbished or brand new ones can save printer users a great deal of money in the long run. Working to clean ink cartridges can be as easy as taking a damp swab to the copper components of the ink cartridges. Users may also need to go to additional lengths of clean ink cartridges, such as using rubbing alcohol to clean the clogged printer heads. Users can do this by filling an empty cartridge with rubbing alcohol and allowing the printer to cycle through its cleaning setting. The alcohol will work to remove the blockage. Printer users can save a few dollars if, instead of buying a new cartridge, they attempt either of these money saving options.
