Silk Painting with Shankari the Alchemist
Monday September 22, 2008 by Ivan Kristianto
Today i have a really amazing experience. I have watched Shankari painting a silk and capture her with a video camera while she was doing it. Actually this is not the first time i watch her paint a silk. I watched her paint a silk was 2 months ago for the first time. But in that time i didn’t get, what the essence from silk painting. And today i start learning and trying to understand what is the meaning of silk painting. Silk Painting? What is that? And what is the meaning beyond silk painting rather than just paint a silk?
“Silk painting is a direct paint-on method. Dyes are applied to silk fabrics using an exciting array of watercolour techniques. The brilliant translucent liquid colours merge to become an integral part of the fabric, which always remains soft to the touch. Silk painting is not static. Movement and fluidity are the hallmark of this art form. As the hand of the artist delicately guides the flow of the liquid, the colours glide through the silk and generate delight and excitement.” (source: http://www.silkpainters.org)
So what is the meaning beyond the silk painting? By watching her painting silk, i start to understand how huge feeling flow from her to the silk. When the colours began merge each other and start fill all empty white space. Paint a silk is like paint your life. When you were born into this world, you are like the white empty silk. And then you start paint your life just like you paint your silk. When you start to paint, you choose 3 colours, and then you start imagine how you will make it. And then you start paint and paint. In the middle you will start to hate your work because you have made mistakes, it didn’t look like with what you expected for. But the more you hate your works, that’s when you begin to love your work, accept it whatever it looks like, and go with the flow. In the end you will satisfied with what you have done, and think how amazing your work is, it’s not perfect or maybe it’s not beautiful. But the more you love it and accept it whatever it look like, the more beautiful the silk is. Pretty same as life i think…
So why don’t you try to feel the same experience as i am? Visit ShankarisBaliRetreat and find out that feeling…
Happy painting.

Can you feel how different these two words are now? Patience is a virtue. Tolerance is what comes before the bridge between ‘now’ and ‘then’ collapses and we find ourselves at war again.
